Difference Between openSUSE, SUSE EVAL, and SUSE!!!
Browsing through suse threads I find so much confusion between openSUSE 10.0, SUSE EVAL 10.0, and SUSE 10.0 (retail)
Lets just make it clear
openSUSE 10: a completely open source version of SUSE Linux 10. It includes most of the same software as the other two EXEPT for any non-open source software. Users of openSUSE 10 will have trouble playing mp3's acc's avi's and other multimedia without separately downloading the needed libs/plugins.
SUSE EVAL 10:This is a version of SUSE Linux 10 that is available for download at no cost. It contains almost all of the same packages as the retail version and doesnt come with the manual or tech support. It has no time limits and is fully featured. It is only called an evaluation version because it can be upgraded to the paid for version. SUSE EVAL 10 contains non-open source programs such as Flash Player, and non open source libs needed to play MP3's
SUSE 10.0 (retail): This is the fully featured version of SUSE Linux. Costs you $50 but comes with a full printed manual and technical support. It also comes with more packages on the DVD because it is double-layered.
so there you have it, just something to get of my chest
OpenSUSE is not restricted to open source packages. You can install the FlashPlayer, MP3 support or Adobe Acrobat as well from online sources. The difference lies in the form in which it is distributed, not in its capabilities!
Let me add that the retail version contains both a dual layer DVD and 5 CDs. The 5 CDs do not contain as much as the DVD does, so users should use the DVD unless they do not have a DVD player on their computer. (IIRC, the CDs are 32-bit only, and even then still lack some packages compared to the 32-bit files on the DVD.)
