I have also tried different distros (Ubuntu, Fedora & Mandriva). The first two installed and booted up ok but Mandriva would not boot after the install. That may or may not be related to the SATA issue. SUSE definately has problems with SAT drives as I tried the 64 bit version and it wouldn't detect my hard drive.

There are two SATAs I and II. There's a difference in speed. Your mother board may only support I and your drive may have strapping for the difference. I have no direct experience but my Gigabyte mother board has issues in that area.

I finally got it booting!!

When I boot with options acpi=off and irqpoll it boots fine and everything seems to be working....
