Booting USB from Grub?

We have tried everything we can think of to boot either a USB flashdrive or hard drive from an internal Grub menu and keep getting an error message. The fact that we get various error messages suggests that there is a correct way to do this. For example, YaST - System - Partitioner shows device /dev/sda1, type /media/usbdisk_1/vmlinuz for our USB flash drive. What is the solution?

do you think you could provide the errors as they can mean lots of things

Not all USB drives allow to boot from them. Certainly you need to set your BIOS to boot from USB (if supported). The initial ramdisk of your SUSE system needs to contain all drivers that are required to load the root filesystem (usbcore/ehci_hcd/usbstorage/sd_mod/reiserfs). I may missed some drivers. You can include them with the command 'mkinitrd -m <modules>'.
