I started with Slack 12.0. I have never run current.
So from my relatively limited experience, I voted for Slack 13 (64bit on my AMD socket 939 computer).
In my experience Slackware just keeps getting better and better.
Or perhaps I have just finally made it over the steep end of the learning curve

I voted for -current, but I vividly remember the night, years ago, I was standing in a CompUSA in Manhattan trying to decide what distro to get myself. My then-wife got fed up with my waffling, took two of the ones I was looking at and held them behind her, telling me to "pick a hand."

I got Slackware 4.0.

If I had known then what I know now, there would've been no decision to make. I've distro-hopped here and there, but Slack is my home plate.

I'm starting to feel old after reading this thread... I downloaded that "new" thing that was a buzz on the "better than UUCP" network - some T-1s linking colleges, government, and select companies called internet - via the school's new 33.6K modems. Some European guy's take on UNIX, version 0.0something.

Tanenbaum and Minix for OS was one heck of a tough class to complete when things never quite worked as expected (too bad I already took the class!). This Linux was awesome except for installing it. I can't remember the name of the first packaged system I used but the first version of Slackware was definitely a hit. The version name change between 4 and 7 was odd but would you believe I still have 7 running on a couple of systems after more than 10 years??? It's behind firewalls with non critical functions but it still runs like a champ, setup and forget for years. Those old 4GB and 6GB drives were pretty tough - I just move the drive from old box that dies to a "newer" box, along with the NIC of course . [try that with windows without getting a blue screen]

I voted for "current" but the first version of Slakware remains my all time favorite!

Nice poll
I started with Slackware 3.1, my first Linux (after SunOS and some weird Unix-like things at work). It took me until Slackware 4.0 to feel comfortable with it, so I voted for 4.0. For me it was the first version I felt in control - I knew how to configure things without looking everything up in books and man pages.
Of course 13.0 & -current are superior, but my vote is a sentimental one

12 sticks in my memory

I think 12 was when the kernel and Slackware really started providing a lot more out-of-the-box functionality on my machines. Hard to say, though, as each version has done more than the last since I started with 8.1.

I personally started off with 3.1 and went from there to 3.6. I think I've used every version since that time.
I would say the 10.x series really took some beating and was certainly one of the most popular.

Of course as time goes on and things progress it makes sense that the latest version is always the most relevant. I think if I had to answer this question directly I'd answer it with "My favourite Slackware is the one I'm using right now" =)

Interesting topic... I have started with 10.1 and used all releases since then. Although, every one of them worked (and works) like a charm, I must single out Slackware 11. Not sure why, but it was really "special" release...

I've been using Slackware since 1.0, but I think all stable release was good. There was consistency in Slackware with each release, over the years I looked to each release with same feelings, but it seams to me all are one same! ...and now current-x64... I was try and other distros, Caldera linux was second best, but... Slackware :-)

i use slack from 7.0 version, if i remember correctly. approx from 1999 / 2000 year.
imho best from latest versions is 12.2.
13.0 like a too "fresh" for me - new kde looks buggy and has a limited functionally, comparing with old kde branch from 12.2, and so...
waiting for 13.1, hope it be again demonstrate principes of old, good slackware - maximum stable, maximum simple, maximum usable linux system...

I wouldn't use KDE if you're looking for that.

I started using Slackware with 10.1. I suppose that is the version I would vote for because it is the one I learned the most from; about Slackware and about Linux. I remember starting with the 2.4.28 kernel in 10.1 and it was always ROCK SOLID and FAST. To me, nothing since has matched the speed and stability of it. I was using it on a Pentium II 350Mhz with 196MB memory and a 4GB hard drive. My -current with a AMD64 dual core, 2GB memory is no where near as fast. To me, the kernel has become extremely bloated. I remember compiling my first kernel (a 2.4 kernel) and it was about a 15MB download. I believe today's kernel's are somewhere around 35-40MB. But I guess that is the price of progress when the kernel has to support so much hardware right out of the box.

Bob
