Hey bioe007,
I added the code into my xorg.config file
and I managed to run modprobe drm and radeon
fine without any errors. But after I rebooted I
ran lsmod and still it wasn't there.

did you start X?

the drm and radeon modules should only load when X is started. Indeed another trick to increase performance I use is to put this in a sript:

rmmod -f radeon 
rmmod -f drm
that is called from my ~/.xinitrc, this unloads the modules before starting X and seems to be worth up to 400fps on some days.

you have to load the direct rending for X, i think that is what queues your box to laod the drm and radeon modules.

btw- have you given up on the ATI proprietary drivers? I keep steering towards he 'radeon' driver 'cause thats what I use & know - but I don't want to be pushy

also you could try just cutting & pasting my xorg.conf - see if that works for ya. (with appropriate editing of course)

the screen was just black and didn't do
anything.So I had to reset the settings
with xorgconfig and then tried some of your

but I'm still getting 210-220 FPS range.

I'm playing around with the "ati" driver that I picked with
xorgconf. I tried also the "radeon" driver and it didn't
work better than the "ati" driver. so ya I'm not using
the driver provided by the ati company.
I mdified my .xinitrc file like this and it didn't
change anything.

try commenting this line out

i dunno why, because lspci -V seemed to indicate it should work.

also, just for s&g's have you tried to run xorgsetup? (instead of xorgconfig) i typically have better luck = less typing later when using xorgsetup.

Hey Nem,did you go through the steps given in the following linkto try and enable your dri?
your DRI is clearly not enabled, so probably starting from square one and using the link above might help.

and my x would still crash and go black.

thx for the tricks u told me 2 try with the driver from ati!
I modified fstab as u showed me and went 2 install the driver.
The way you showed to install the driver didn't work. I
usually install the driver like this,
I cd 2 the location where the driver is, then I su
and run sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.28.8.run
I just follow the insrucations and install it.

Then I ran /usr/X11R6/bin/aticonfig --initial to configure the driver.

Well it looks like my performance is alot better
so that a good sign!
So which benchmarker should I trust to roughly see how my card is doing?
I mean glxgears was doing 210-220 FPS and now it's showing over 1000 FPS
so it means my card is working much better now.
I later added the lines
