/dev/cdrom reassigned on boot -- annoying problem

Hi.

everytime I boot my machine /dev/cdrom points to /dev/hdd, my cdrw drive. It should point to /dev/hdc. Each time I log on I have to manually fix this. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem. I'm using the 2.6.8.1 kernel. If there is any information I can add that may help please let me know.

It's udev that's causing this, you'll have to edit your configuration of udev. Please do a search on udev on this forum and you will find the answer

I had no idea what to search for, so thanks for that. I found this solution and it worked. As this seems to be a common problem I'm posting it here:

edit /etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules:
Code:
# permissions for IDE CD devices
# --- BEGIN EDIT
BUS="ide", KERNEL="hdc", NAME="hdc", SYMLINK="cdrom cdroms/cdrom%n" GROUP="cdrom"
BUS="ide", KERNEL="hdd", NAME="hdd", SYMLINK="cdrw cdroms/cdrom%n" GROUP="cdrom"
# --- END EDIT
BUS="ide", KERNEL="*[!0-9]", PROGRAM="/bin/cat /proc/ide/%k/media", RESULT="cdrom*", NAME="%k", GROUP="cdrom", MODE="0660"
edit /etc/udev/scripts/make_extra_nodes.sh:
Code:
# If we can, add a default /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd link:
#if /bin/ls -l /dev | grep -w cdrom 1> /dev/null 2> /dev/null ; then
#  ( cd $udev_root
#    /bin/ls -l * | grep -w cdrom | cut -f 2 -d : | cut -f 2 -d ' ' | while read optical_device ; do
# # It has to be a cdrom. Last one wins.
#      ln -sf $optical_device cdrom
# # If it's a DVD, set that link as well:
#      if grep -i dvd /proc/ide/$optical_device/model 1> /dev/null 2> /dev/null ; then
#        ln -sf $optical_device dvd
#      fi
#    done
#    unset optical_device
#  )
#fi
worked for me
