Strangely I can play DVD perfectly but when i play audio cd's I get no sound at all although the content of the Cd is displayed alright. What is wrong here. I have updated my system to current apart from alsa-oss which is still the original 9.1 version.
What i found was that when i update alsa-oss i get the hw_random error and then when i black list it, my usb modem doesn't work so i reverted that alone back to the original version. All the other alsa modules are current and like i said every other media apert from Audio CD plays with sound.
This problem sounds strangely familiar, but I can't pinpoint it. Maybe the volume is set to zero for CD. Type in Alsa at the command line and check it.
The command is alsamixer and when i checked all the volumes were up. I therefore decided to try gxine and it played the CD with sound !. I then tried Zinf and the CD player and there was still no sound.
That's wired anyway thanks i can at least use gxine to listen to my CD's so thats fine. But i will mess about with those 2 programes latter. They are dedicated audio players and should do their job else they're not fit to be on my PC.
you should look your kmix or aumix setting, move up your "line" bar in aumix or kmix setting, not a "cd" bar make sure your drive is correctly, if you play with kscd make sure the drive setting is /dev/cdrom.
Hi, i have the same problem and i can not fix it.
I run kmix and i turned on CD bar and i checked if the drive was /dev/cdrom in kscd settings, but no sound from CDs. Everything is ok for Mp3 and .mpeg or avi files.
If it helps this is the message of kscd
kscd

are you sure that kmix or aumix not in "mute" status ?, try to "move up" your "line 1"bar in kmix or aumix, and if your cd device still cannot read cd from /dev/cdrom you can try another dev, such as /dev/hd? "?"=append your cdrom, /dev/sr0. Don't forget to edit your fstab and mtab.
