Binding keys in Gnome.

Hi,

I would like to bind a program to a key on my keyboard.

So if i were to press the Windows key a program will launch.

I have looked in both key setting apps that gnome has and can't seem to figure out how to do it.

How do I do this?

Oh and if I can't use the windows key for whatever reason... I have a bunch of multimedia keys that I don't use, I could also use them.

Are you using GNOME 2.6? If so, open up 'keyboard shortcuts' and you can configure them from there. However, there is a bug with this where on some keyboards you have to use gconf-editor to change the keybindings. If you're using GNOME 2.4 then you'll need the program Acme, which will let you do the same thing.

I am using gnome 2.6 (dropline)...

Oh... I have seen you on the dropline forums I think...

Anyhow, what I wanted to do was hit a key and have a program (any program) launch. This can not be done directly as far as I know. So I binded the windows key to open the defult e-mail client then I changed the defult client to the program that I want to run. Which in this case is the 3ddesk app... god I love that thing. I wanted to be able to hit a button and swithch desktops uning that app and now throught my makeshift hack it works.

Gnome should give us this option in the next release...

I did a little googling about this and another way is to muck through gconf-editor for Metacity keybindings. There are entries for assigning custom commands to certain keys; also there are entries for these custom commands. I setup mine to run 3ddesktop when I hit the "Windows" key (Super_L is what binding it has) and <Ctl><Alt>Left or Right do a 3ddesktop flip to the left or right desktop. Cool progry, 3ddesktop.

I like it too... hey try this... it's kinda fun.

When in 3ddesk you can use the arrow keys to change from left to right. Hold down the left arrow key untill the desktops are spining around really fast then hit enter while still holding the left arrow key... it's neat.

Kinda like a desktop roulette... you never know which one it is gonna land on.

I am trying to do exactly the same thing, except I want to bind the Windows Key + Left/Right to switch desktops. How do I add a new keybinding in Gnome 2.8? As near as I can the the "Keyboard Shortcuts" editor only allows me to edit already existing bindings.
