I wish I could help out with the question, but I don't know jack about a q3server. If you can ping it though I don't know what the problem would be. See if you can run netstat on the server and post up what you get
Is it not a case of your firewall blocking access to the port 27960? If so may I recommend the following link for an quick simple firewall script http://kreiger.linuxgods.com/kiki/?K...firewall-tools From within here you can open up the port.
I had a similar problem with half-life until I opened the port.
Sure does, but you shouldn't have to worry about it unless you are behind a router of some sort?
Gentoo doesn't come with anything you don't want, so unless you put iptables on there (check with emerge -p iptables) then you likely don't have a firewall. If you did, fire up your favorite FireWall editor (maybe firestarter?) and let down your guard on the ports in question.
