Redhat/Mandrake Vs. Slackware

Currently I have mandrake linux 9.1 installled on my machine. I came across a slackware 7.0 book which was really cheap ($8). My question is that how different slackware and redhat based distibutions are and whether I will be able to use the same commands and stuff.....in other words, will reading that book help me learn linux in general...
thanks in advance

in general, linux books are all - round helpful and somewhat similar, especially for terminal commands. i'd say yes, they would help most of the time, 8 bucks is a good deal.

RedHat and Slackware are on the opposite side of the spectrum in my opinion. RedHat users are newbies and Slackware users are gods.
