Native Linux ATARAID with Sil0680 ATA133IDE RAID
Hi...
A few days ago, I was trying to get my new raid controller to work with Linux.
First, I created the raid set (first tried 2 drive stripe mode, then 2 drive mirror mode).
I tried Mandrake 9.0 - it actually allowed me to install the ataraid driver when it asked if I had any SCSI controllers; got to creating partitions but I could see that the partiton software of Mandrake could directly see both HDD's and not the RAID set I defined in the controller BIOS... proceeded to format; no probs; installed system; no probs; rebooted - LILO: 90 90 90 heh heh heh.
Tried various combinations - nope... read the Linux ATARAID FAQ; tried installing with Redhat 8.0 next and it went through just like Mandrake; then when rebooted - similar thing... examined FAQ more closely and tried reconfiguring kernel options and comipling the Redhat 2.4? kernel - did the make etc - took forever (the FAQ didn't mention it would take that long -geez)... got errors compiling but decided to reboot anyway since I was just fooling around - yep - got "kernel panic" - so just forgot about it and disabled raid from my controller... it did trash my 20GB hdd though - but it was buggy anyway under windows - kept getting corrupt files.
Is there any distro that that is compatible with my controller?
From Silicon Image - I believe they're also known as Command Technology (CMD)... Incidentally, the CDROM that came with it had a Linux subdirectory for a (.bz) file but it confused me because the readme talked about the High Point 36.. whatever - do these have the same BIOS?
We do not provide any Linux drivers for this card and neither does the vendor
of the "SIL 0680" Chipset. However, according to our information Linux has
integrated driver support for the "SIL 0680" Chipset.
The Driver for this chipset should be in the kernel source:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_CMD64X and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_CMD680
Officially the card does not support Linux.
Best regards,
Andreas Schlieck

I am using clear RH8.0 on my machine and recently I bought a ATA controller with Silicon 0680 chip onboard. The chip is recognized ny kernel whenever booting I finish with Kernel panic No init found. I was wondering what it was and booted a RH8.0 installation disc with linux rescue. It booted without problem but when i did:
#cat /proc/partitions I have realized that my hda is not the disc that was called hda before plugging the controller. I simply do not understand why the system boots the kernel from my old hda (80G) and when initializing init it changes suddenly to another disc (120G).
Do you have any idea or simply there is an obvious explaination that my brain does not see ?

Pawel
Pawel !!!
I found the solution for this !!!
Boot: Linux ide=reverse so it reverse scans the IDE disk now my machine boots up with a charm !
oh great, at least i'm not the only one using this card. My problem is, when i was doing my very first Rh9.0 installation, the process got stucked everytime when it's copying the Kernel 2.4.*...the error msg was "Media Error or Hardware Failure".
Obviously it won't be on the media as i did the media check for couple of times. And yes, i did unplugged all my PCI cards except the Raid Card, it still stucked at there.
I'm very new in this linux O/S, anyone of u out there can kindly help me with this ? Thanx in advance !
