Howto set up the ati Radeon64DDR for performance in 3D environments?

I'm getting awful 3D-performance in games like Tuxracer and other (I would consider) not to heavy 3D-apps.. Why? How can I configure my Radeon so that it operates as good (or better) as in windh00s? (I vaguely remember something about "GLX".. lost it )

I installed my Radeon from the Debian installationCD, together with rest of my distro; thus I don't know exactly what drivers it used. All I can say is that X calls it a "Radeon".

Through the eyes of a newbie dri.sf.net isn't that clear on setting up things. So some detailed instructions would be appreciated.. (<- how formal.. )
What to do? (remove-install-setup-XF86Config-4 )

Anybody with the same videocard?

Tnx Electro, I'll try the walkthroughs on these sites this week.. I'm not clear on everything there though; for one thing I hope I won't need CVS to finish the install, because I don't have an Internet connection on my PC..

But I'll give it a try!

jtlinux1967, yes ATI does have drivers for LINUX but no they don't have LINUX drivers for all their cards. ATI only has LINUX drivers for 8500, 9000, 9700, and FireGL.

Question

I just got a new box at work. It came with the fancy ATI 9000 you speak of. I too can't run so much as tuxracer without my display grinding nearly to a halt.

I've been all over the ATI site, but they don't seem to have drivers that correspond to the latest version of glibc (that comes with redhat 9).

I really wish it was possible to just buy a Linux box with fancy hardware that works *out of the box*. Seems pointless to buy hardware from a vendor and then have to set everything up yourself anyway.

You never did post the solution you presumeabley found. It would be kind of you to do so.
