a nother sound problem

Hello there,

I have a bit of a problem with my sound card. The thing is that I often can't get any sound with most apps that use the sound card. The weird thing is, that if I use xmms to play a file, it always does so (after a long pause that is). After that, sound on every app works. It looks like xmms initializes the sound card or some thing.
I have a ALS4000 sound card and i think i'm using the oss driver. (I don't know how to figure this out for sure). I'm also using the 2.4.10 kernel that came standard with my suse 7.3 distro.
Do I need to recompile my kernel ? (I was planing to do so any way) If so, what options should I give when compiling it ?

please help me.

p.s. I can't get any sound with quake2.

Hi,
what output plugin is xmms using? Does running "lsmod" outputs something about "alsa" (the alternative sound system for linux)? What does running "play somefile.wav" in a console returns? Is there anything in the logs (they are probably in /var/log)?

Hello there,
xmms is using the oss driver as output plugin. Doing "lsmod" does not any thing about alsa. It does show :

snd-pcm-oss 18368 0 (autoclean)
snd-pcm-plugin 14480 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-mixer-oss 4768 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
agpgart 27328 3 (autoclean)
NVdriver 989760 11 (autoclean)
snd-seq-midi 3280 0 (unused)
snd-seq-midi-event 2800 0 [snd-seq-midi]
snd-seq 39584 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-seq-midi-event]
snd-card-als4000 2112 0
snd-als4000 12016 0 [snd-card-als4000]
snd-pcm 29184 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm-plugin snd-als4000]
snd-mixer 23488 0 [snd-mixer-oss snd-als4000]
snd-opl3 4336 0 [snd-card-als4000]
snd-hwdep 3120 0 [snd-opl3]
snd-timer 8336 0 [snd-seq snd-pcm snd-opl3]
snd-mpu401-uart 2288 0 [snd-card-als4000 snd-als4000]
snd-rawmidi 9312 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-mpu401-uart]
snd-seq-device 3744 0 [snd-seq-midi snd-seq snd-rawmidi]
snd 31344 1 [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm-plugin snd-mixer-oss snd-seq-midi snd-seq-midi-event snd-seq snd-card-als4000 snd-als4000 snd-pcm snd-mixer snd-opl3 snd-hwdep snd-timer snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]
soundcore

playing a wav file works, but only if I use xmms first.
And there is noting in the log files that can help.
Basicaly, the problem is'nt that big. I can play any thing I want. It's just anoying. And besides, I don't like it when something does'nt work the way it should. What realy is a major bomber is that I got no sound in quake2. When ever I play quake it gives me this :

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: Invalid argument
SNDDMA_Init: Could not mmap /dev/dsp.

This shows something is'nt quite right. And I want to fix this.
Thanx for the help
.

What do you have this running on, your SuSE distro? Here's the link to setting up your card using ALSA, even though it appears that already are running it, it may give you some ideas to troubleshoot with.

Cool
