Angry Fedora 3 core installation

When trying to install Fedora 3 core, I keep getting BUG messsages from the very beginning similar to the following:
Assertion (heads <256) in disk_dos c: 486 in function probe_partition_for_geom ()failed
If you ignore this message it takes you one step further with a similar type of bug error message.
If you cancel it goes a whole lot further with several messages of alike nature. If you manage to get to the partitioning sequence then this is a real B....
THNX in advance.

Did you do the media tests when prompted?

It's a quick way to rule out media issues.

It might be that it simply has troubles with your hardware.

Any hardware details would be helpful.

And I found this as well....

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=268917

It's a fix for the problem.

It's also documented well here.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=138430

Seems to be an issue with parted. The work around is to go into rescue mode and manually create your partitions. Their is a fix via update image... just follow those threads and that should take care of the issue.

Jeez, had to edit this a bunch...

An easy way around that error and simple to do is enter your systems bios setup and select user-type HDD instead of auto on the hard-drive option and LBA translation method. Worth a try, simple and easy to reverse.

Yes you can, the easiest ways I know are by either following the above post about changing the bios options and then doing the install, or by doing a quick install of fedora core 2 first and then perform an upgrade to fedora core3.

Thumbs up Fedora

Thanks LLS I will give it a try. One can only hope. I am not satisfied with Mandrake but if all fails I could live with it.

Hi all,

I have questions about fedora install with dual boot,
what I have done

(1) installed fedora to the entire /dev/hdf, with
/dev/hdf1 --> /boot,
/dev/hdf2 --> swap
/dev/hdf3 --> /
/dev/hdf4 --> Extended
/dev/hdf5 --> /home
/dev/hdf6 --> /usr

(2) During Install, I choose Grub on /dev/hdf1

(3) Reboot, I have a Windows XP on /dev/hda,

(4) Use bootpart to copy the /dev/hdf1's first 512 byte boot sector to a file,
then use NTDLR to boot it

(5) Reboot, can't boot into fedora 3

(6) Physicall Removed my /dev/hda, and put this /dev/hdf as my Master IDE primary.

(7) Boot into linux rescue mode from the fedora CD, reinstalled GRUB onto MBR of /dev/hda (used to be /dev/hdf)

(8) Reboot, and it works.

My question is What could have I done to make the dual boot work.

At the moment I have to live with swapping harddrives.
