Old Kernel remove?

Hello

I just upgrade the Kernel of RH 7.3. When I reboot the computer I see the choice between old and new kernel: OLD: 2.4.18.3 NEW: 2.4.18.10.
Is it possbile to remove the old kernel? If so how? Or it's good idea to keep it?

Well generally if you don't have a hardware problem and need the new kernel for that purpose or if there is some security thread ... you should stick with the old one and don't update your kernel at all (excluding it from up2date). But if you still want to remove the old one:

rpm -qa | grep kernel

you will see 2 kernels in your case so all YOU would need to do is to rpm -e kernel-2.4.18-3

I was just trying to do that right now in redhat 9 and I got this error message. I'm quite a newb so i don't know what to do

i typed

rpm -e kernel-2.4.20-8

and i got

error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

but maybe i did something wrong. i'm not even sure if i was in the commandline or not.
i went to the redhat startup button > system tools > terminal
and typed that there

hehe ... you are trying to remove a package as a normal user. For operation that
concern the entrire system, like package removal, you've got to log in as root.
Patience -- you'll get accustomed. Oh, and don't forget the ultimate tutorial
for using rpm:

ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/PLD/dist...429.noarch.rpm

install it:

rpm -ivh maximum-rpm-1.0-0.20010429.noarch.rpm

and reach it's index via path:

/usr/share/doc/maximum-rpm-1.0/index.html

read chapters 1-7 and you will be fine.
