Slackware on 64 bit

I tried searching for this, so don't flame me if it's answered somewhere else.

I'm looking at buying a 64-bit laptop. I want Slack on the laptop, and if slack doesn't currently have support for 64-bit kernels, I don't want to deal with it. I can't find the answer in the slack documents or on here, anybody know?

are we talking x86-64 or PPC??

I haven't kept up-to-date with technology, so I'm not sure of the differences. Last time I got into computer hardware was when the Ghz was just broke.

What I'm looking at is an AMD64 3000+ 1.60Ghz

i believe that once you have installed your regular (32-bit) slackware, you can recompile your kernel for 64-bits without any problems... so then at least your kernel will be taking full advantage of the x86-64 cpu...

but if you want everything to be 64-bit i'd suggest trying another distro, maybe gentoo, fedora, suse, or mandrake - all of which have native 64-bit ports...

There is no official AMD64 Slackware.

However, one of the posters on alt.os.linux.slackware is putting together an AMD64 Slackware, slamd64, but it's still very much in the early alpha stages (a lot of packages still need to be converted, there are known bugs, etc) I've not tried it myself, so I can't really say much else about it.

HI I know this is a slackware forum ( i luv slack ). But for my M6811 Amd64 laptop the best distro so far is Kanotix (deb based) . It just works !!! Ati 9600 no problems inc. FGLRX Broadcom wireless n.p. , Acpi (laptop power management) ok , I haven't tried the media drives but everything else was tough to get working on a lot of other distros. My setup includes Win Xp & Xp64 (gaming) Slack for 32 bit linux, Kanotix64 for 64 bit linux . I am a newbie but until slamd 64 matures Kanotix 64 just works.

And thus I was convinced to give Kanotix 64 a try! Good sale guest!

I have been tryin this version (Slamd64) for a few days now, and as far as i have managed to find out, Samba, XMMS does not work as is (that is x86_64 version), and getting some lib problems trying to install Americas Army and UT2004 Demo (64-bit version).

Other than that, Nvidias chipset and graphic drivers install like a charm, getting real nice glxgears figures, try KDE 3.4 yesterday, NICE !!

That is interesting. I have xmms running under debian 64 bit. So is it speedy?

Also check #slackware on irc. There is a guy on there that has WORKING x86-64 iso's, I believe he is working with Pat on this project. I have them and have not used it passed a install, setup and startx. I am using FC2 x86-64 with no problems so I haven't dug into the slack yet. I installed it on a buddies machine and he has had no problems as of yet. As for the creator of the iso's, I can't remember his name off the top of my head. Just hang around for a while he will be around. Sorry.

As a follow up for the curious, I too am getting a segfault during the install. Right after I do swapon I'm segfaulting out.

Found a mirror with what appeared to be a more up to date RC1 Set of CDs and had the same problem.

As a update to what I have said above, that segfault was my own fault for not reading the directions during the activation of swap. If you elect to not have swapon configure your swap, the install goes fine...or so it appears at the moment.
