Modem detection in Suse 9.1 Personal

Just wondering why Suse 9.1 Personal doesnt detect my modem and how do I get it to work.Do I have to use the modem driver install disc as I would with Win XP.
My modem is a Conexant 56k V.9x DFVc Modem, I hope this is enough information.
If its not as easy as installing the drivers from the disc,can someone please give a step by step instructions for getting it to conect.

i ur modem is not detected then u need to inbstalll th driver,if u have a linux driver in ur driver disk,try installing that
or the above link will be usefull

post us the driver u have for linux in ur disk..

Ok, tried to install the driver from linuxmodem.org and I get " needs GCC " .I have no idea what that is.

GCC is a c compiler, needed to compile the driver for your distro. It should be on your install CD's. You may also want to install the development stuff as well, as most "roll your own" drivers require the development packages as well.

Look for stuff called: gcc-3.2.2, gcc-c++-3.2.2, gcc-cpp-3.2.2. Note that the version numbers might be different.

Also, if you want the older non-speed-locked version of the HSF driver, you can get it here.

Baldrick65: the GC*'s arent on his installation CD's. He's running SuSE Personal.

Aussie-Ocka: You'll first need to download and install GCC, as it's not included inb your distro of choice.

Oops I didn't notice he was using SuSE 9.1 Personal. You can download GCC here. That should get you going.

That folder GCC is huge and i only have Dial up ,Do I need the whole folder or just parts of it, there seems to be RAR and Winzip copies so do i only need one or the other, can you give me any info on what exactly i need to download, thanks, I'm using cute ftp to download

I think the only one you need is this one. However, I wonder how you compile a c compiler without a c compiler

If that doesn't work, you can try a pre-compiled binary here. But be warned, it's huge ... about 130mb

And Oakey (and Australia in general) is great ... plenty of open space, fresh air etc.

Oh what is .tar and .gz ,is it like a compressed file like .zip or .rar

.tar.gz==the archive is tarred and passd through gunzip(fiule compressor)
.tar.bz2===tarred archive passed through bunzip2

i have seen that .tar.bz2 takes less amount of space as compared to .tar.gz
since both are diferent compression utitliy

Ok , have downloaded and installed the GCC without any problems, then downloaded the specific driver, this being
hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt04082400full-1.i386.rpm for my Conexant 56k V.9x DFVc Modem ,when I installed it ,it returned errors,
Has anyone got any ideas as to why this would happen.

You have to make sure you get the file made specifically for your running kernel. I found this out when I installed Mandrake 10 Official yesterday. To find out exactly which kernel you're running, type uname -r in a terminal. I had to install the new driver which is speed locked to 14.4k (yuck), so I'll probably shell out for a license. By installing a binary (rpm) you don't have to run hsfconfig after. Pretty easy.

/edit - I shelled out for a license ... I forgot how slow a 14.4k connection can get ...

Thanks Baldrick65 ,I had found this out, got the right driver for my kernel,Up loaded it fine,well it loaded without errors,BUT, I still cant connect.
Do they overwrite each other,the drivers I mean ,when you install them.
Maybe I think it has something to do with the connect scripts or something.
Also ,when installing the hsf driver, there are other things that try to install off my installation disk which didnt install properly when doing the original install of the OS,but they just keep returning errors, I cant figure this out because they were supplied with the OS.
One of these being xscreensaver ,or something, & something to do with the cd player.
Maybe I can find more recent versions of these things and try to install them.

I'll post the connection log for my modem,, and see if someone can figure it out.
All I want is to be able to connect using Suse so it saves me moving backwards and forwards with OS's just to browse the net for information on how to personalise Suse, I dont want to sound like I'm having a whinge,but its starting to peev me off a little.
