slackware 10 & lexmark z12 printer

hiya....

well.. i'm new to linux... just installed slackware 10. got most everything configed. only problem is i have a lexmark z12 printer and apsfilter says it has drivers for a z11... but not a z12. um... where does a person go to get drivers (or modules...that's what they're called in linux.. right? lol) and how does one install one for a printer in slackware 10?

...and while i'm at it... one more minor question... i got KDE set up as my main desktop... but would like to test drive gnome to see what it's like... i installed everything... so gnome should be on here... but how do i get it working? when i type 'startx' it goes right into KDE.

Can't help with the printer, sorry, but as for Gnome:

When you first log in (before you startx) type:

xwmconfig

Then select your gui.

Hi,
Don't worry, the driver for your printer is already included
in Slackware 10 (espgs 7.07)
First of all you need a ppd file for your printer.
It can be obtained from this address:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/ppd-o-m...ark-Z12&show=0
Now copy this file in
/usr/share/cups/model
and make it world-readable
chmod a+r /usr/share/cups/mode/Lexmark-Z12*
Please make sure that cups will start on boot
chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.cups
Start CUPS
/etc/rc.d/rc.cups start
(kill cupsd first if it was started already)
Now open your favorite web browser and go to
http://localhost:631
You can configure your printer via a web interface.
It's very simple.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me
by e-mail.
Best regards,
DJ B.A.

You will connect to your machine (localhost) on port 631
where cupsd listen (see /etc/cups/cupsd.conf).
Username : root
Password: supply your root password
Good luck!

well... it looks like all KDE print manager is doing is acting as a front end for that site... if i look close i can even see it's connected to the internet address at the bottom. the problem i'm having is when i print something i get one line that is yellow... blue... the next red... i tried setting it to 'black and white' but it doesn't help... the driver is listed as not fully working. it sounded like it can't do color (which isn't really a problem for what i use it for...) thing is this printer only has color cartridge... it does black and color using only the one cartridge. so- i'm wondering if lexmark has a z12 with 2 cartridges? ...wonder if i should stick a black in it instead. -not sure. tried to config it to see if that would help... no go. so anyways- thanks for your help. any ideas?

You should consider using a black cartridge.
