Question S.10 + K 2.6.7 -> SOUND: ALSA OK, KDE ARTs - Wav OK, OGG, MP3 - crash

Updated: (see post 3 bellow)

SYSTEM:
Slackware 10, with only one mod - 2.6.7 from kernel.org
ALSA compiled WITH kernel. OSS disabled in kernel.
Use KDE that came with stock Slack10 (3.2 i think)
Hotplug on, ALSA - modules.

PROBLEM:
No sounds through ARTs . (no KDE system sounds/notifications)

ALSA works. Soundcard detected in alsaconf, alsamixer sees card and shows/controls volumes. In fact, I am listening to XMMS through ALSA plugin right now - no probs.

QUESTION:
Where can I find logs/info on what is actually borking in ARTs?

Resolved some, still need help

After post #1, found a /opt/kde/bin/artscontrol.

1. Upon execution of artscontrol, it was complaining about missing "libesd" (Y the hell does KDE requre esound?)
2. Installed esound*.tgz from the CD.

Now aRts can play Wav files, but crashes on OGG and MP3.

I thought the codecs are missing and did
cd1:/slackware/l/$ installpkg *.tgz // i.e. installed all libraries from the L folder.

Still the same problem - aRts can play Wav files, but crashes on OGG and MP3.

What else do I have to install?

ADDNL INFO:
