Is 85Hz the Max Refresh in Linux?

Hello all:

(4-Days Newbie here - 20 instals, 300 clicks sort of newbie).

I am running BearOps (v3, 2.4.18+). Great Distro.

I have been into xf86 conf-4, and conf-4 save, and bearops x86 conf., lilo.conf, chosen video mode#9 highest rows/cols at loader stage, etc. and done all I can to get a good refresh rate. (Rage Fury 32-meg AGP, and Hitachi 19" CM771). In Win98, I ran 800 lines @ 120Hz refresh - for long hours of writing - and, 1152 lines @ 100Hz for nice graphics and low fatigue. In Linux, I entered the Hitachi's synchronization ranges in all relevant x86conf. (31-96kHz horizontal, and 50-160Hz vertical). You should have seen the conservative -crummy- values that were in there at first!! (They looked like monitor values from 1986!) I then chose 1024 lines in BearOps desktop re-boot, etc. No matter what I do, I check (via a button on the Hitachi itself) and I'm stuck at 85Hz refresh rate!! O.K. so, what do all the power users do (hollywood sp.effects, astronomers ??) to get 1280 lines 120 Hz on their big Sony monitors etc.?? Can anyone pls help me get 1152 lines @ 100Hz? or do I have to return Linux and wait 5 years? -Thanks!!!

I think in your distro there is a nice program that will make it easier, but I don't know it...
Edit /etc/XF86Config-4 (but first make a backup copy of it!). Find Monitor section. There will be lines HorizSync and VertRefresh. You can enter there your own walues (probably those from monitor's manual). Then go to Screen section and change modes.

I tried numerous times, putting my Hitachi's sync ranges in x-86conf-4
(31-96K @ 50-160Hz), and still no
luck - she won't refresh above
85Hz! (I'm ideally trying to get to
1152 lines @ 100Hz - yes, my hardware
supports it with room to spare!).

Here's something: my Distro rep. at
BearOps can't get his machine above
85Hz either. He is an expert. Now what?
Do I knock on Mr. Torvalds' door and ask him to
wake up to today's refresh rates, or
do I go to X-86 Free sites and plead
for sane refresh rates?

Please, please help!! I can't afford LCD
monitor (19") nor, WinXP Pro.

What video card do you have? You need to have that working correctly as well.

Fill in the right values and have it calculate the modeline for you. Then edit your configuration file and add the right modeline.

Before you go pleading to Linus or the xfree developers I would search the mailing archives at www.xfree86.org there is lots of usual information there which could solve your problem.

that's a bloody brilliant page. got an extra 20Hz out of my monitor.. did mean i realised it's pretty crappy tho... xvidtune is also damn handy for messing with modelines. I had to use a 1993 head and it couldn't do screw all resolutions (800x600 really can't go over 50hz... bugger...) xvidtune managed to change the aspect of the screen, to make it wider than the controls would allow, so i got it back at a real 4x3 size. kickass.
