is the module loaded?
"lsmod" will tell you if "i810_audio" is loaded or not. if it isnt then try "modprobe i810_audio". then give it a test. ive also use the same driver and load it up at boot time in "rc.modules"
I have an Intel 865PERL motherboard and didn't get it to work with FC1. However, I'm not very persistent either. I was trying to get ALSA to work with it. I think FC2 will have ALSA built in, so I am sort of waiting/hopping this would solve my problems.
Someone told me they got it to work with Mandrake 10RC1.
I had problems too with an on-board sound chip, on my Asus P4C800 M/B. It turned out that I had to connect the line-out CABLE to a different output connection! (Took me hours and hours to figure that out!) So really everything is software-controled, it seems! (I think the cable is now connected to the mic input or so, but it works...) Nasty of course if you use a dual boot system (Win/Linux), since you have to switch the cable all the time...
you should check to see if your kernal was compiled to support the i810 audio device with built in support (it sounds like there is no module compiled). if you have neither built in kernal support or "compile as module" then you will probably want to recompile your kernal with support. do a "make menuconfig" as root in "/usr/src/linux" and you will be able to check your current kernal configuration.
i use kernal 2.6.3, here is where i tell the kernal to compile module support from "make menuconfig":
Device Drivers --->
Sound --->
Open Sound System --->
<M> Intel ICH (i8xx) audio support
Check your sound mixer settings (KMix, aumix, etc). I've run into problems with SuSE 7.2, and Mandrake 8.1-9.2 where one of the mixers would default to all channels muted. I have a different sound card (SoundBlaster Live PCI) but it might be that easy.

Seeing that not everyone in the world uses KDE so I don't think they'll have kmix, here's a more sure-fire way.
amixer set Master 100 unmute
amixer set PCM 100 unmute
# Only if the above doesn't succeed on its own:
amixer set Center 100 unmute
amixer set Surround 100 unmute
# Test the sound:
aplay /path-to-sound-file.wav
echo "I was lazy and made this a shell script since I'm seeing this message."
If you're lazy, just make that into a shell script. lol

Hi,
Which Motherboard do you have ? If it is latest Intel 865 series, Use ALSA driver on Linux "Fedora Core 1". It works fine. ALSA has got module snd-intel8x0 which supports latest motherboards Audio codec. Let me know your motherboard series & audio codec.
Yogi.
don't be dumb like me....go into setup and make sure ac97 support is not disabled....after playing around for a week trying to figure why the sound card was not detected....i decided to go into motherboard setup.... and low and behold..it was disabled...
when i brought the computer in to the techs at the store to find out about a usb problem...the diasbled all sound...and i never checked it out again...
My sound card was detected my fedora's sound detection utility as:
intel - 82801EB AC'97 audio controller
module: i810_audio
When i clicked to play a test, I would hear nothing. If this happens to you just try plugging the speakers into a different audio jack as tdemedts mentioned. I originally plugged the green cord into the green jack, which usually works for dells. However I had to plug the cord into the black jack in order to hear the sound.
That's odd because black in my card is for the rear channel. I'm so glad that I know how to fix my own comp. I'd never like the idea of a tech touching it. lol
