I have a new Dell Inspiron 1100 with A23 BIOS, 14.1" 1024x768 max resolution screen and i845 video card. I installed Mandrake 9.2 (XFree86 4.3 with hardware acceleration) as soon as it became available and everything works great - the kernel used the whole screen at 1024x768 once I added the vga=773 option to the kernel in lilo, hardware acceleration works for OpenGL games like ArmagTron. Two problems - I get some insmod error/hint twice every boot that says something about checking the syslog and nothing at all about whatever the problem is. I haven't checked the syslog yet b/c I don't know how, but I'll figure that out.
The other problem that I'm writing about is that in X (but not in a plain bash kernel out of X), it seems to see a 640x480 monitor. I can set the resolution up to 1024x768, but it will only use the chunk in the center that is 640x480. (You can scroll around with the mouse to see the rest of the 1024x768, just like on my last laptop which had a 1024x768 screen but Windows let you choose 1280x1024) I have checked the XF86Config-4 file, but it doesn't say 640x480 anywhere in the entire file. I have tried explicitly writing in the config file that its 1024x768, but nothing helps. I have set the monitor to generic laptop monitor 1024x768 and dell laptop display 1024x768 but there seems to be no difference.
I have read various stuff that says to use Ctrl-Alt-Keypad +/- but those don't do anything and I've seen others that say to change stuff in the config but none of that helps either. Has anyone had the same problem or know how to fix it?
Thanks
Eitan Mosenkis pengi10000@netscape.net

@eitan1989 - I have the exact same problem on my Dell Optiplex Gx270 Desktop. It has an onboard video using an Intel 865 my XF86Config-4 is almost indentical to yours.
thanks for the link el_pajaro! I'll give that a try If I can understand it LOL
I know its for the Intel845 but it can't make mine run any worse.
that is the great thing about linux, if you don't have support from your hardware vendor, there is allways a chance. Like my QuickCam VC no support from logytch for WindowsXP but there is a real chance to installed on linux. I haven't had time to try it out but I know there is a way.
Great having helping you eitan1989 you are the first person that I have help. Helping others really feels good
