I'm not sure why you've been unable to register on the shipit site.

If you have a high-speed connection, and since you've already got jaunty kubuntu (9.04), why not just upgrade to karmic (9.10), rather than relying upon shipit? Open your sources.list (/etc/apt/sources.list) with a file editor (as root or sudo or whatever), and change all occurrences of "jaunty" to "karmic". Then, reload/update, and then upgrade/apply. You could also do this with synaptic: choose settings/repositories/, and change the distribution on the various repositories to "karmic" from "jaunty".
