how to make a USB port as a COM port

Hi,

I have to communicate to a h/w platform through COM port.
But my IBM R52 laptop doesn't have COM port.
So I use a COM to USB convertor, and connect it to the USB port of my laptp.

On Windows, I use teraterm, to access this USB port as COM port, I select the COM4, and everything works fine.

How can I do the same on linux.
I used "minicom", to listen to "/dev/sda2" (this is the device node that corresponds to that USB port), but this didn't work. tried ttyS3 too (which may not make sense !)}

Do I need to install any special driver to do this on linux ?

Thanks in advance.

-Ebin.

That device is either your HDD (if you are on SATA) or a USB storage device of some type, but it certainly isn't a USB-to-serial adapter.

The device node you want is more than likely: /dev/ttyUSB0

Thanks, I will try this on Monday.
