Mdv 2008 PowerPack version of RealPlayer does not work.

Hi all, I've recently upgraded Mandriva from 2007Free to 2008Powerpack.
The problem I have is the Realplayer Plugin that came with Firefox does not work. (whilst I am here, nor does Windows Media either... same symptoms)
However, the Realplayer plugin within Konqueror works ok for a few minutes and then stops and will not restart!

In all cases Realplayer plugin starts, but when you press play nothing happens... the display shows: Playing 0Kbps 01:00:00/01:00:00....but no sound!

I've tried logging an incident with the Mandriva experts but with no joy.

I've also uninstalled and restalled 2008Powerpack (not Home partition) but still no joy.

Does anyone have any ideas?... i use (or used too) the Realplayer plugin to listen to a lot of pre-recorded radio on my PC, but not anymore!

By the way, listening to a live RAM broadcast via the RealPlayer plugin works fine!.

Have you tried using the RealPlayer version from http://www.real.com/linux/ ? You want the package thats marked as "Red Hat Package".

thanks Reddazz, I haven't tried this yet. The version of RealPlayer plugin got installed with the PowerPack i bought, downloaded and installed direct from Mandriva but didn't work as i've already described.
I was hoping someone might know how to fix the existing installed problem.

What is the best way to resolve this, reinstall?

Given that I already have this installed do i need to uninstall anything before installing again?

If so, how do i go about uninstalling a plug-in or do i just uninstall the whole RealPlayer app via s/w manager?

Just uninstall the RealPlayer app and the plugin will also be removed.

ok, via the software management tool I removed the following software:
RealPlayer 10.0.9.809-1mdv2008.0, and
RealPlayer-rpnp 10.0.9.809-1mdv2008.0.

I noticed that the standalone version had disappeared from the Menu but when I then started firefox it i could still access and run Realplayer, ie from the BBC/Radio website...(now called iplayer), what's that all about then? Has it removed it or not? and should i proceed to download and install the version you recommend?

Iplayer uses flash not realplayer. What is the output of running
Code:
rpm -qa | grep -i realplay

Hmmm!... thought i'd try to download the realplayer package you mentioned in your earlier post whilst i waited for an update to my earlier post, but got an unexpected result when i went to the site and clicked on RedHat package... it didn't progress as i expected.

what it did was refresh the window, display the following in the address field:

http://forms.real.com/real/player/do...10GOLD%252Erpm

and clear the main display..

I expected it to begin downloading via the normal firefox pop-up download window or take me to a screen to confirm the download.

Any ideas?

Ok, I need to do a sensecheck here... when you go to www.bbc.co.uk/radio and click on the "Listen to BBC radio" button i thought it ran the Realplayer plugin... is that not the case then?

In the past when i ran 2006 2007 Free versions i thought by installing realplayer it enabled me to listen to the BBC radio player...

Is this your understanding too?

The BBC have only recently renamed their product i-player radio.

In any case, the problem i have is if you select a previous radio broadcast it will not play via this method.

The problem also seems to be present with the Live BBC radio broadcasts via windows media player too.

The output shows that you do not have RealPlayer installed. In the past the BBC used to make extensive use of RealMedia but lately it seems like they are moving to other formats.

thanks for the information... i need to think about how best to proceed in fixing this problem.
Everything i've read on the BBC website relating to the iplayer s/w so far seems to indicate that it still uses Realplayer especially for 'on-demand' broadcasts which is what i mainly listen too.

Also, when i enter "aboutlugins" into my browser there are still some realplayer entries which is confusing. i.e

Helix DNA Plugin: RealPlayer G2 Plug-In Compatible (compatible; Totem)

File name: libtotem-complex-plugin-gstreamer.so
The Totem 2.20.1 plugin handles video and audio streams.

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin RealAudio document rpm Yes

Also, do you have any idea about the download problem reported in my post dated 18-12-07 22:31?
The file won't download but i can successfully download other files such as RPMs?

thanks

Removing this totem plugin file enables the Firefox Realplayer BBC radio player on Mandriva 2008 Powerpack:-

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libtotem-complex-plugin-gstreamer.so

If you have been trying other changes to your system, check that the files nphelix.so and nphelix.xpt are still in the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory as these are the Realplayer plugin files needed by Firefox.

After recently updating Firefox to a new version my radio player stopped working; the update had replaced the totem plugin file. Removing the file again restored the radio player.

To move this file out of the plugins directory and store it in a new directory:-

Check Firefox is not running.

Start konqueror with root privileges by running the command:-
kdesu konqueror

Use konqueror to create a new directory:-
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins_removed
(or any other name you prefer)

Use the mouse to move the file into the new directory.

Listen to the BBC Radio iPlayer on an external RealPlayer

The BBC Radio iPlayer can be made to work on Mandriva 2008 Powerpack without having to remove the Totem plugin.

Adding the MediaPlayerConnectivity extension to Firefox allows the real media content of websites to be played with a stand-alone RealPlayer instead of the Firefox RealPlayer plugin.

This improves the BBC Radio iPlayer by giving full forward / backward navigation in the stream and a better volume control. Also, both play-again programs and live radio stations can be bookmarked into the RealPlayer Favorites for direct access independent of Firefox.

To install MediaPlayerConnectivity:-
In Firefox:-
> 'Tools' > 'Add-ons' > 'Get Extensions'
On the Mozilla site search for 'MediaPlayerConnectivity'
> 'Add to Firefox' > 'restart Firefox'

Let the first-run wizard search for your media players; change the Real Media player setting to 'realplay(usr/bin)'
> 'Next' > 'Finish'
Wait for Firefox to restart.

In Firefox:-
> 'Tools' > 'MediaPlayerConnectivity' > 'Configure'

In the MediaPlayerConnectivity configuration window:-
> 'Media players'
You should see '/usr/bin/realplay' in the Real Media Pathname box.
> 'Expert mode'
Put a 'x' in Real Media column A for Autoplay.
> 'Apply' > 'OK'

Clicking on a program link on the BBC Radio iPlayer website should now play the program externally in RealPlayer.
