Enabling direct rendering for beryl on an nvidia card? (Debian Lenny/Sid)
Hi people, some months ago (actually, like one week before Etch became stable) I installed Debian Etch on my machine. I've done like two dist-upgrades from that time, so now cat /etc/debian_version tells me I'm on lenny/sid. Now I'm trying to get beryl working here; followed the beryl debian wiki, so I installed the official nvidia driver from nvidia's site (don't remember which version since it was like 3 months ago, but nvidia-installer -v tells me it was built on "Mon Feb 26 23:38:52 2007"). As usual, I edited the "device" section of my xorg.conf and changed 'nv' for 'nvidia' (I also added other lines necessary to run beryl) Now I'm trying to start Beryl, but when I run beryl-manager, all I get is a white screen with the mouse cursor in it, so I ran glxinfo and this is what I got:

So, what's wrong here?? I thought changing 'nv' for 'nvidia' in my xorg.conf would automatically give me 3D acceleration??
P.S.: as a side note, my xorg version is 7.2-5
Thanks in advance for your answers, and sorry for the long pieces of code (just wanted to give all the relevant info).
HI comprookie2000, thanks for your answer. Well, I installed the driver from nvidia's website manually since the beryl wiki suggested to do this (it seems that the driver version in the repositories is a bit old for beryl). Anyway, I'll try it the debian way tonight with the guide you link to and let you know how it goes.
I could not for the life of me get 3D. I got the white screen trying to get beryl to work nice in Mandriva, never got it working right in Mandriva, don't care neither because Debian is my fancy. I used the same xorg.conf from Mandriva in Debian testing with Nvidia script drivers from Nvidia and beryl works really nice except no 3D. So I was playing around with xorg.conf again going with some "sure" methods I found with google. Then all of a sudden I un-checked "3D only on mouse rotates" in Beryl manager settings for 3D which was pre-checked in a default install of Beryl in both Mandriva and Debain, and I finally got it all, including 3D. Here is my xorg.conf:

I tried eco2geek's Section "DRI" suggestion just before the last changes I made in the conf. file, for the first time I got the white out in Debian.
Below is my xorg.conf prior to the last few changes I made, I backed up the one in the prior post and reloaded this one and everything works with this setup also.

Hi folks, sorry for the delay (I was too busy at work until yesterday when I wasn't trying to figure out what was wrong with my X configuration). Well, I finally got it working!! No matter what I did, I always got "direct rendering: No" when invoking glxinfo | grep -i render as well as the following line: "OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect", so I guessed this was the problem, but I couldn't figure out how to solve it. Anyway, what I did was to uninstall the previous driver (downloaded from nvidia's website), and install the latest one (version 100.14.11), restarted the X server, ran glxinfo, et voilą, it showed me I had direct rendering enabled (I really have no idea how this could get solved this way since the previous driver was supposed to give me direct rendering... maybe its removal also removed some weird configuration? I'm, not sure at all). Well, that's pretty much the story; after that, I copied some lines from Junior Hacker's xorg.conf to mine (thanks for that, mate ), as well as some lines from the debian beryl howto, ran beryl-manager and magically I'm on beryl now (I even have cube effects and stuff).
