Gaim Won't Connect Saying Connection Would Have Blocked!
I use Gaim for instant messaging and it has worked very well until now. Yesterday it refused to connect all of a sudden and is not able to connect until now.
I am connecting thru SOCKS 4 proxy, via ip 192.168.0.1 and port 1080. I am able to connect to the IM service from Windows XP. When connecting thru Gaim on my Mandriva Linux 2007 box, the Gaim Debug window says the following:
Quote:
account: Connecting to account ehsanullahjan
connection: Connecting. gc = 0x8511580
dns: Wait for DNS child 5492 failed: No child processes
dns: Wait for DNS child 5491 failed: No child processes
dns: Created new DNS child 5502, there are now 1 children.
dns: Successfully sent DNS request to child 5502
dns: Got response for '192.168.0.1'
socks4 proxy: Connecting to scs.msg.yahoo.com:5050 via 192.168.0.1:1080 using SOCKS4
socks4 proxy: Connect would have blocked.
socks4 proxy: Connected.
account: Disconnecting account 0x81af898
connection: Disconnecting connection 0x8511580
yahoo: In yahoo_buddy_icon_upload_data_free()
connection: Destroying connection 0x8511580
Has anything at all changed on the Windows machine, like firewall settings, security settings, networking settings, or any other thing even remotely potentially able to screw up the connection?
Do all other internet services work properly, and it's only Gaim?
I asked my internet service provider if he changed the server environment in any way around the time I began to experience this issue. He told me that he re-installed Windows Server 2000 on the server machine. I guess I have started to see this problem after this.
But my ISP says he's no firewall installed (other than ISA Server which is configured to allow everything, anything) and no other port-blocking things are in-place. The SOCKS4 port 1080 is open. And that's true as I can connect to the MSN and Yahoo! messenger services through the same port on Windows XP. But it doesn't work on Mandriva.
One other point of interest might be that lately I installed Samba and Swat and configured Swat to run inside the super service xinetd. I am also running the default firewall (shorewall). For the sake of troubleshooting, I un-installed both Samba and Swat, disabled the firewall, and stopped the xinetd service. But Gaim was still not able to connect with the same error message as before.
No good ideas unfortunately.. I have had some on and off problems using Gaim, and had to switch to Kopete the other day after blocking a user; when I hit 'block user' Gaim crashed and wouldn't run again since.
Sorry I don't know what else to suggest though about your connection issue.
So you're using Kopete. Great! That can help me. In fact I tried using Kopete before Gaim but it wouldn't connect. And that makes sense because I use SOCKS4 proxy to connect to the Yahoo! and MSN messenger services but there is no place in Kopete where I can specify the SOKCS4 proxy information.
Can you please tell me how can I configure Kopete to connect through my SOCKS4 proxy?
The message displayed in Gaim debug window is now changed a bit. Here it goes:
Quote:

May be it helps to resolve the issue. Can anybody please help me here?
Recently I changed my distribution to CentOS 5. That's a great, enterprise-class distro and I'm really lovin' it! However, Gaim won't connect on CentOS 5 too unitl I updated the bind-utils and bind-libs packages to their latest version: 9.3.3-8.el5. Now Gaim is able to connect to both Yahoo! and MSN using my SOCKS 4 proxy and, hey, it's great to have it working!
