what do you do when "logging in" into slackware install

I recently installed Slackware a few times, and I started wondering what do you do, when you boot from the Slackware CD, and the script prompts you:

You may now login as 'root'.

Slackware login:

Type in root, hit enter and then either do fdisk (or cfdisk) and continue the install. Why, what do you do?

Actually. that login is fake. You can just hit ENTER or type anything there and the same thing happens. The installer runs from an non-login shell within an initrd.

Exactly. And that line which reads in the "login" now reads:
read BOGUS_LOGIN;

but AFAI remember, it used to be:

read JUNK;

Angry

We've been deceived! I, for one, feel insulted by this tomfoolery. All along I've been thinking I logged in as root at install, but it was all one nasty conspiracy, no doubt from Patrick himself in order to undermine the intelligence of Slackers worldwide. I demand compensation!

Compensation can be found in the /etc/rc.d/rc.S script of the install CD initrd.
The relevant part of it says:

Code:
#Fake login:  (fooled ya! ;^)
cat /etc/issue
echo -n "slackware login: "
read BOGUS_LOGIN
cat /etc/motd

Yes, I accidentally discovered this little detail of slackware install, and while I never before wondered why I'd have to login into an install initrd shell, it now seems to me obvious that the login is fake. But I had no idea before this discovery... And as I now had to install slack a few times, I just laughed conspiratively and hit enter...
And then I got the idea, "Hey, how many people out there know this detail?" And so I posted this poll - to enlighten everybody about this little gem about slackware install...
Happy New Year to everybody!!

I type root, and press enter. I guess I'm such a tool.

Hehe, I see that we tend to be not very humorous in our actions. I am not too surprised to see that a lot of people don't know about this PV's trick (I also didn't until recently), but I am surprised that everyone (including me) who knows the trick just opts for the fastest way - nobody types in anything humorous into the fake login prompt...? I was hoping that people show their attitude towards such jokes from PV by typing in something "unexpected" and then feel important... I didn't know that we all do things in a "minimal effort" style

I've known for years that you didn't actually need to type "root," but I'm not so wise as to question it. I just figured that it was logging in as root for me! It never occurred to me to actually try to login with something else...

yeah, you "may" now log in as root, but you don't have to. I've known that for a long time, but never thought much of it as being a kind of joke....
