Which is the best linux terminal for programmers and why?

xterm
simple and highly configurable

One thing xterm has going for it is the fact that it's ubiquitous. If you've got X, chances are 99.9% you've got xterm. One problem is that on some systems it's run SETUID root, which bugs me.

I really liked the tabs of gnome-terminal, but the version I was using was kind of sluggish at displaying text (with GNOME 2.10, I think). But I don't use GNOME anymore, so using gnome-terminal is kind of out for me. At least on FreeBSD, you have to install a lot of GNOME to get gnome-terminal. For me, anyways, it's not worth it.

I've used eterm, aterm, and rxvt before, but for some reason (I can't remember ) I liked xterm more.

Another terminal emulator I spend a lot of time in is Emacs. It's got a shell mode that I use frequently when programming. Not really a standalone terminal, but ...

Konsole is missing from that list and thats the one I would have voted for.

aterm, but only because it was the only one I could get to do transparency.

I don't know if this qualifies .. but I've used yakuake a lot on kde .. perhaps it's worth to be in the poll

I am a recent convert to konsole having used xterm for years. It's that damned firefox which is making me expect tabbed windows in every application I use.

Xterm with tabs and I'd go back immediately. I miss the Ctrl and click menus.

I use konsole because it integrates with konqueror (KDE); I can type commands while looking at the directory contents, and can look elsewhere mid-command line if I need a file name, etc. Also, it can link to the browser so that when I change the view it automatically 'cd's for me.

yes my vote would also be for konsole, followed closely by eterm (i love the transparency bg).

and is also integrated with many other development apps such as kate and kdevelop. gotta love the integrations, though i dont use kde, but i use alot of the kde apps from enlightenment..

Actually, I must say, if it hadn't been for cupuboy's post I'd probably never heard of yakuake. I've just downloaded and tried it and have become an instant fan!

eterm rocks the boat. It does everything aterm does (I used to use aterm) except it does it better and faster.

gnome-terminal, because it's got a decent code base, is very fast (output wise, not load time), integrates w/ gnome well, has tabbed terminals.

Actually .. I got aquainted to it in exactly the same way ... and I really got used to it .. I still have a little itch to click f12 wherever I want a terminal

Terminal (or Xfce-Terminal) is my favourite.

You know crag im using the latest xfce and I just cant get terminal to work it open's and then just crashes right away. <shrug> then again I never could get all the icons and stuff to work right ither. Probably a symtom of me 1: makeing my own linux via LFS and not doing everything by the book
and 2: moving my /usr/local space every few weeks

right now my /usr/local is on /home/usrprogs with a fake mount in fstab to remount it in /usr/local
