No GUI in Mandriva 2006 under VMWare

I installed Mandriva 2006 under VMWare Server, and set up the GUI to be both KDE and GNOME.

However, when I start Mandriva, all I get is the text-based login screen.

How can I set it up to automatically use KDE upon bootup?

man inittab

Change the default runlevel from 3 to 5

Something like
cp inittab inittab.bak
sed s/id:3:initdefault:/id:5:initdefault:/g inittab.bak > inittab

might even fix it

When I had the problem, I fixed it by doing this:
1. Log in as root on the screen.
2. type "runlevel5" and hit Enter.
3. type "startx" and hit Enter.

Also, how much RAM do you have in your computer? That may play a factor in your problem.
