Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

HP 845c Printer: Getting "Catastrophe" error

When I try to print something with my HP desktop 845c printer, I get this error:

A print error occurred. Error message received from system:

Unable to start child print process. The KDE print server (kdeprintd) could not be contacted. Check that this server is running.

I have to reboot to get it to print again. But then it tends to go bad again, displaying the same error message.

I am using Mandrivalinux 2006; KDE 3.4

I was afraid of this. No one was able to help me the last time I posted this some time ago. Do you suppose it's just my printer dying on me? I had a hell of a time under windows with the printer.
The paper would be feed into the printer too much, leaving the ending of a one page document to be on the second page, then it'd say some paper error, lights flashing.
It did that several times in a row, even after rebooting the PC.
It's not doing it anymore, but it doesn't work more times than it does work.

This isn't looking good.
Is there any printer that is good and runs well under mandrivalinux?
I don't care for anything fancy, printing out letters or buttons or whatever you can do on those things, basically just a printer that prints basic documents or cd covers
