Network Problem

Hey linux Gods,

Just another nubie here, and after spending the better part of the night last night finally ridding myself of XP, the Fedora Core install went great, no problems. But my internet does not work. I dont know wether linux was supposed to/tried to set up the network connection, but i need help making it work. Just to put this out there, I have little idea of DNS or any other network jargon or workings.

Hopefully with a little help I can learn Fedora Core 5 and keep it. I owe my soul to anyone who can enlighten me.

Tom

P.S.--Can anyone point me to some good readings on how to become adjusted to FC5?--Also, any readings on what programs i can run to try and incorperate my old Windows files(.html, .txt, .doc, .java, .class, etc)

What sort of connection do you have? Dial-up? DSL? Cable? Model of modem (if applicable)?
If you're using GNOME, you should be able to find out what network devices are configured by looking under Networking (I think it's System > Administration). Tell us what you see.

.html can be read/edited in Linux: use your browser or else a web authoring program (many options), unless you just want to edit in a standard text editor.
.txt can be read in a standard text editor.
.doc can be read in openoffice or abiword (both with some occasional problems).
.java and .class can be used with sun's java, the supposedly crossplatform programming language.

Unfortunately, I've not succeeded in getting a wireless card to work under Linux. But things look promising, if it is recognizing the connection. If you look at properties for the linksys, what is set for the DNS? Is it the IP of your router?

Chances are, you'll need someone else's help with this. But at least you've posted some of the info they'll need.

Hostname: localhost.localdomain
Primary DNS: null
Secondary DNS: null
Tertiary DNS: null
DNS search Path: null

the ip of my router seems to be somthing like 192.168.1.100 or 192.168.1.000

Try entering your router's local IP address as the primary DNS and see if that works.

Under devices select eth0 and click the edit button.

On general tab select "Automatically obtain IP address setting with:" and pick "DHCP" from the list.

In DHCP setting box right below select "Automatically obtain DNS information from provider"

Click OK to exit.

Back at devices tab make sure eth0 is still selected and click activate button.

Check internet connectivity again. If it's working now edit device setting again and select "activate device when computer starts" and click OK.

That should do it.

after doing all that, Crito, i box pops up which says

"Determining IP information for eth0...failed; no link present. Check Cable?"

btw, this computer has internet, so the modem and router seem to be working fine, can FC5 and XP occupy the same network?

makes me think i need a driver

you don't need a driver and you don't need to futz with firewall settings. looks like you're not using DHCP, so you'll need to configure the IP settings manually. if XP still boots, then open a command prompt and type: ipconfig /all

you'll have copy everything from there and enter it in FC5. don't know who setup your LAN but DHCP would have made life a lot easier.

Observation

Ummmmm, just an observation. I am having the same problem trying to get the wireless working and what I noticed in what you have been posting. The device you listed as what Fedora is seeing is an ethernet device, not a wireless device. I'm thinking that's why you got the error when you tried to activate about "Determining IP information for eth0...failed; no link present. Check Cable?" I'm pretty sure it wouldn't ask you to check the cable if it supposed to be wireless.
