Increasing a Logical Volume over a new hard-drive - Possible?

Hey Guys,

The subject is pretty self-explanatory, but here's a bit of detail:

Im currently saving for a couple of 500Gb SATA drives and a RAID controller to create a NFS server running RAID level 1.

Because I just moved house it's gonna take me a while to save up the £400/£500 to buy the kit.

My new housemate has offered up a 160Gb IDE HD.
I'd like to install this disk and increase my already existing logical volume (mounted on /shared) to include this disk as a temporary measure.

Is this possible?
Could I lose data?
Is this something I would have to setup using the commandline or does it have a KDE interface?

Please help.
Thanks

That's wwhat LVM is designed to do for you. Command line is the (only, I think) way to go. Look at man lmv for basic information, and google for LVM2 tutorials.

Watch out. If you do add it to your LVM and one of the hard disks fails, then you're dead. If you ever plan on using LVM over hard disks, you should make sure that the hard disks are in some RAID configuraton (ex. RAID 5 or RAID 10)
