lxdm works well here and as already said gdm is not shipped in Slackware...
OK comment out that line for lxdm if you're running slack because .... wait .... you're running a derivative right? anyways, if one is running pure slack and they set run level 4 whatever long-in manager that is installed that kicks in -- that one. I do not use it because it does not log out properly.
for some strange reason lxdm didn't let me login -- maybe cuse I rushed it and used a sbo that was already compiled for that current. so I removed it, and downloaded it again and redid it. I just have not logged out or rebooted yet to test it.

this is that DVD-iso that one downloads off of the mirrors that I have that is 14.2 it is a few months old for sure, but is that not the reason for the update after install to make it the very latest 14.2 using the mirror listings in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors where it is divided up into 2 sections one is 14.2 and the other one on the lower half is current?
therefore it should resolve into that fully patched or up-to-date 14.2 when that install-new and upgrade-all have completed?
Yes, if you install 14.2 using the ISO provided on the mirror, uncomment a 14.2 mirror in your slackpkg config, then run upgrade-all (after update gpg and update), you'll be running a fully patched 14.2. You should never need to run install-new with a stable release because Pat won't add packages to it (that's what current is for).
If you mean on your previous post where you used "current" to signify both 14.2 and -current, then I didn't take the time to wade through what current was matched to what. It was hard to tell you used the official ISO and I figured you were using a self-generated one using Eric's script.

kdm is the default manager unless you don't install it (it is part of the kde/ series). If kdm isn't installed, xdm will be used.

thanks for the insight. it has been a long long time I have not ran current.
I have been running current, this install is not current. that is why I sated dvd-iso laying around and installed 14.2 off it. being sure not to use the word current.

I've been wondring about that. as Pat removed GNOME so I do not know why he didn't edit that rc.4 to remove GDM as it is not even included anymore. I always do a full install, always.
