First time that I've ever cried over someone I "only" knew via email.
Ian is a huge loss for our FOSS community and should be remembered that way.

@everyone, Please respect his family's request and stop digging in his personal life (as happening on reddit).

RIP Ian.

Many heartfelt condolences to all of the Debian community.

42... Too damn young in my opinion. R.I.P. Ian.

A massive loss

My deepest condolences. The death of this genius of a man is a massive loss not only to the world of free software but to every freedom loving individual in the world at large. Ian will be remembered long after the rag tag and bobtail mediocrities who made their millions from copyrights and patents are forgotten. In the long run the Debian distribution of gnu/linux and the philosophy behind it will do more for Africa than any multi-millionaire foundation.
I hope his family can take some small consolation from this thought.

I am a relative newcomer to Debian and like any other entitled twit began using it without first knowing anything about it's roots or it's founders or acknowledging my debt to them. The more i read about Ian Murdock the more i realize how indebted i am to the man for the freedom his vision has afforded me. A true prince amongst men has passed.
What bothers me is why isn't there any hue and cry about the tragic circumstances of his death, why isn't there a call for an investigation by the highest authorities. Forgive my coarseness but if someone of his stature had passed this way where i come from, there would have been just that, flags would have been flown at half mast..

Dedicated to Ian Murdock
------------------------

Ian Murdock, the founder of the Debian project, passed away on 28th December
2015 at his home in San Francisco. He was 42.

It is difficult to exaggerate Ian's contribution to Free Software. He led the
Debian Project from its inception in 1993 to 1996, wrote the Debian manifesto
in January 1994 and nurtured the fledgling project throughout his studies at
Purdue University.

Ian went on to be founding director of Linux International, CTO of the Free
Standards Group and later the Linux Foundation, and leader of Project Indiana
at Sun Microsystems, which he described as "taking the lesson that Linux has
brought to the operating system and providing that for Solaris".

Debian's success is testament to Ian's vision. He inspired countless people
around the world to contribute their own free time and skills. More than 350
distributions are known to be derived from Debian.

We therefore dedicate Debian 9 "stretch" to Ian.
