How to remove (ubuntu 'softRAID') dmraid without messing up files on other partitions

Hello!

I had created 2 software raid 0 partitions which I had used for root and home partitions but now I have no use for software raid or the old OS anymore.

I had previously created the array following:

which looked similar to this:

md0X: active raid1 sdaX[0] sdbX[1]
      256896 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md0Y : active raid2 sdaY[0] sdbY[1]
      256896 blocks [2/2] [UU]

(from 4 partitions on 2 separate HDDs). These HDDs also contain other non raid partitions with other OSs and important data.

I don't think I can manage backing up the current OS so I want to make sure I proceed properly.

So far I had simply deleted 2 of the raid partitions on one disk and reformatted them with Gparted. But on the other disk I keep getting libparted errors:

(which I don't remember clearly at the moment but I will copy the saved info tommorow when I access the computer in question).

The partition is in use by the kernel and needs to be rebooted ...

so gparted can't delete the partition.

Now the same link mentions:

to remove a disk from an array:

sudo mdadm --remove /dev/md0 /dev/sda1

but now I already have reformatted half the array on one disk. I didn't think that software raid left any metadata on the drive, but clearly something is confusing Gparted.


Do I load Gparted again from cd and work from the terminal? I want to make sure that I am only removing the partions in the remaining array and not other valuable partitions.

Note: I will try to get more exact info tommorow from my HDDs.

Try to backup the important data and then proceed.
