Question Update an offline Red Hat Enterprise 5.7 Linux server without network connection

Hi All,

I am still new to the linux world so would greatly appreciate if someone can give me some tips on the following issue.

Basically we have a group of servers (PKI environment) that they are isolated with no internet connection. One of these servers is red hat enterprise 5.7 and it's been 4 years + since this server have been installed but since then these servers have never been patched with security patches.

For the windows servers this isn't a problem as we used the MBSA tool which you basically install it and copy across the offline catalog and voila, you got a full report of missing updates.

Could anyone of you share any solution regarding this please? I can't seem to find any solution on the net.

Appreciate you help!

Glenn

You can download the latest ISO, burn it to CD, and take it to the disconnected network and use it as the repository for the updates. Keep in mind that the latest RHEL 5 version is 5.11, so there will be a lot of changes. You can download the latest RHEL 5.7 ISO if you need to maintain that specific version (assuming you have Red Hat Support).

seeing as this is a redhat SERVER
you have the required redhat support contract you had to buy every year

contact redhat tech support
for help on migrating your old and out of date 5hel5.7 servers to the still old but up to date RHEL 5.11

HOWEVER
that should have been automatically done on the NORMAL everyday system updates
Code:
yum update
or by running a upgrade
Code:
su -
yum upgrade

Hi all,

First of all thanks for your reply as it really helped me understand what needs to be done and I managed to go further thanks to you.

@John_VV this can't be done since the server is isolated from the internet; so we need to declare a repository from the DVD.

I am having some issues on the DVD repository but we're there [COLOR="Silver"]

The best way is to install a satellite server that gets updated from time to time. Then you can do as john_vv suggested.
