do you need the dbus and hal daemons in kde?

This is beyond me, last day I mistakenly removed both the hal and dbus daemons but removable devices support in kde still works great... it looks like the only things you need are libhal and the dbus-qt thing, no need to start the daemons, actually, starting the daemons cause my mounted hd partitions not to be displayed in the media folder. I simply love the udev/hal/dbus trio, it's the worst documented pile of hacks that has ever happened to the linux world

If you want things to work peachy you need the stuff. Also, sometimes you don't notice but the services get started without your permission if needed. Heh, happened to me a lot at Gentoo, had to actually remove some stuff to prevent it being loaded.

thx for your feedback, still i find it strange, it looks like the offending package is "hal", starting the hal daemon causes removable devices not to work they are supposed to, just like i mentioned in my first post, i.e. i can't see my mounted hard disk partitions in media for example
