Package install freezes Mnadriva 2006,

I am trying to install extra packages using the mandriva control center. (I assume it uses RPMDrake) When i go to install the selected packages the install window freezes. I thought maybe it was downloading updates so I went to sleep.... 9 hours later it was still hanging there.

Also I went to easy urpmi to get urpmi setup and it hangs when i am trying to configure it the way easy urpmi website instructs. (I am a bit of a noob when it comes to urpmi, well a bit of a noob anyway.)

Any Ideas?

it sounds like either a corrupt config (that already made it onto your sys, or possibly the repositories are temporarily down.

this is why i don't use mandy any more, and i obsess over 'good' backups.

i faced a similar problem too..later i realised that libstdc++5.0 was creating the problem. so when u choose the packages to be installed, uncheck this package and installation of packages will work fine..

Can you install XMMS without the libstdc++5.0 package? Or is there a better audio/video player I could use?

xmms does not play video.

mplayer seems to be the best overall av player.

it has codecs availible from real to win and everything in between.

i guess mplayer is the best bet..if you are confrtable with command line options..theres a gui based player but the interface is not very intuitive..

i suggest using amarok for audio and xine for video..

In the software sources manager in the Mandrake Control Centre remove all the sources, goto easyurpmi.zarb.org and try it again. Maybe try different mirrors to the ones you used before because some can be a bit flakey.

Mandriva comes with amarok to play MP3s and Kaffeine or Totem (both xine frontends I think) to play videos. Once you get the sources configured from easyurpmi you can install xmms (if you don't like amarok) and the video codecs (xine-win32, win32-codecs, real-codecs).

thank you all, for you help. I think I have what I need. But I am still having a problem with easy urpmi. It takes a few hours to run the commands and fails. I have high speed cable so there shouldn't be a problem. I was wondering if there is a specific port that urpmi uses that I could create a static route to on my router.

i doubt that is the problem. verify that the problem is with you or rh.

chances r, it's rh. in which case i would think you need to find repositories that have been verified to be good (and of course faster than rh's).. and stick those in your config file for urpmi.

Yeah try selecting different mirrors at easyurpmi - there are some mirrors in there that are flakey.

All the mirrors are normal http or ftp sites. In fact a good way to test them would be to cut and paste just the url from the command that easyurpmi gives you and stick it in your browser. If your browser can't seem to connect then you know its a dud mirror.

Any of the sites listed at easyurpmi for main - all the repos are just http or ftp sites that you can browse in your web browser if you want.
