Thumbs up

I think the problem may be bcoz of the filesystems.
When u build a kernel, in Kernel versions. 2.4* by default. I don't abt Kernel versions 2.6*. Filesystem ext2fs is not selected thereby leading to kernel panic.

Try selecting ex2fs in filesystems when u run "make xconfig" or something similar.

All the best!!!

This means Fedora is lacking something in its kernel that your PC needs. There is nothing wrong with your PC.

The same happened to me in one of my older PCs when I tried to use Damn Small Linux. The reason being the I way understood it then is that DSL has a smaller and NOT a full kernel. Trying to rebuild the DSL kernel so that it works for this PC of mine was not worth the efforts in my opinion.

Debian has a full Kernel so if it is working for you then go ahead and use Debian.

In case you install from CD, can it be caused by an 'old' CDROM drive and a kernel assuming DMA support? I had only occasionally this failure when installing Debian, and later permanent after installation trying to use the CDROM until I added a CDROM-DMA-off startup script in a way that works. The installation maybe critical, though. Maybe do the first install with a 'less demanding' (older, some 2.4) kernel?

Most amazing thing happened to me. I received this message on installation. Brand new server.
Somewhere on the net I saw a hint that worked.

When you get the prompt that asks about graphic or text install, type giberish.
That generates an error message. Respond to that with a <cr> and you will be golden. :-)

I don't know why but it worked for me.
Installation complete and this is typed on the installed FC 4.

Maybe someone else can explain it to me.

I had instances of kernel panic during installs of Fedora Core 4 and SUSE 9.0, while Ubuntu installed smoothly on the same hardware: IBM Xeon servers via Belkin KVM & Belkin 1U console.

I recently fixed the problem for Fedora Core 4 by not using the Belkin KVM & console. Hitching up a standard keyboard + mouse + screen solved the Fedora Core 4 installation problem.

Sometimes problems have obscure solutions! You don't mention details on video card, screen hook up, but at what point does it go into a kernel panic?
