Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

I want to make a terminal for my wife to log in on

I want to buy the minimum hardware for my wife to be able to log in to her account on the
Linux machine, and preferably/possibly run X .

If possible sharing the internet connection from the "main box" and utilising the cd burner etc.

As I understand it that these things can be done easily with a newish machine and a switch/router, cross over cable etc but it would be great if we can pick up some older hardware and get up and running, something like a serial terminal.

Thanks for any advice, I know nothing about this stuff so any ideas/suggestions are very welcome

If you are using Linux, you can config one more monitor/Keyboard/mouse. As a result, 1 machine with 2 terminals.

Mail/post me if you want more detail.

Thx.

Why not just set up a separate login account for your wife on the Linux machine? Just run 'adduser' and create a new account. Buying and setting up a separate machine just to connect to the Linux box seems way more complicated than it needs to be. -- J.W.

I did such a thing with an old second-hand laptop: minimal Mandrake8.2 installation with X11. It is a Toshiba 300CDS (P150MMX with 32MB RAM, and 2GB hard drive).
Connection was through XDMCP first. Then I switched to X11-tunneling by SSH (more secure). And now, I'll probably switch to VNC/X11/SSH.
