Unhappy Installing Slackware on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDS

Yes it's an old crappy laptop, but I want a Linux PC and I like my gaming too much to sacrifice my good computer.

http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/cont...pro_430cds.pdf

There are the specs. I've gotten the boot and root disks to load into memory, but the setup can't detect the install CD. I've tried it with the CD Drive on the external cable and I swapped them out and it still doesn't detect the CD. (the drives seem to be hot swappable)

I could possibly try a network install, but that'll be a big hassle.

I'm using Slackware 9.1 with the bare.i boot disk, the install.1 and install.2 root disks as well as the pcmcia.dsk supplementary root disk for my network adapter.

I'm going to sit down in about 10 minutes and flash the BIOS for the newest version just to have it and I'll see if I can boot straight from the CD (which I couldn't do with the old BIOS)

Thanks in advance.

Nevermind... I got it installing. I'll whine for help when I attempt to get everything else working though.

So, how did you get your installation going? Did you find a flash BIOs upgrade for booting from the CDROM drive? I have a Toshiba Tecra with similar stats and am having the same problem. Though I do have the boot and root disks installed on the hard drive, I just can't find a color.gz file that doesn't have errors on it.

I read everything about the 'puter and just booted off of the floppy. The CD Rom in the 430CDS only works if you have it in the internal bay on the laptop. The external bay is only a FDD cable. *shrug* I'm getting fluxbox working right now I hope

One question. Did you do anything else to get linux to boot?

I'm trying to get DSL (Damn Small Linux) on my laptop, a Satellite Pro 430CDT. All I get is a "SYSLINUX Version: 1.76-0 (Debian, 2002-10-4)". Nothing else happens (except a beeb ever keystrock, after bout 6keystocks).

Any suggestions, advise, ect. would be helpful.

Thank you.

Similar laptop...

I've just installed SuSE 8.0 on my old Toshiba Sat. 225CDS about 2 hours ago, and everything is going okay except for that its not recognizing the PCMCIA slots, meaning that my Wireless card won't work.

In the hardware probe it says that there is no PCMCIA found, but it should be on there - any ideas?
