I need Vi editing help

hi i need to edit my xf86config file (by the way this is REDHAT 9 i am using) as my resolution has gone a bit wrong and i can't see anything on the screen as the res is too large (see an earlier post in software) i have been told to use vim. (or Vi or whatever its called) so i tried by typing:

vim etc/X11/xf86config

this loads vim, but the edit window is empty

can someone please tell me (in complete idiot language):

how to load xf86config in Vim
how to edit it
how to save it
how to get out of Vim to reboot

I think you'll find that xf86config should be XF86Config

As for using Vi have a look at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Vim-HOWTO-11.html

it loads an empty file because you're creating a NEW file called xf86config, instead of loading the existing XF86Config -- Linux is case sensitive, the files are different.

check the howto or man page for all the commands - there are a lot. there are two modes, write and command, you start off in command. type i to insert text, then hit ESC to get back to command mode. :q to quit, ZZ to save and quit.
