Problems reverting to Upstart on 16.04

I'm trying to revert back to upstart on 16.04 instead of systemd. I'll not go into all the reasons here, but if you want to know, and to head off "why not just use systemd/" responses, you can check out the thread:

I've done the following (https://www.maketecheasier.com/re-en...tart-ubuntu/):

$ apt-get install upstart-sysv
$ update-initramfs -u
$ reboot

Upon reboot, my init scripts worked properly with one big exception. I no longer have the lightdm login screen. My console screen is blank. I've tried `apt-get remove lightdm; apt-get install lightdm`, but that didn't help.

Ideas?

Some progress. The directory /etc/init is where Upstart looks for its init stuff, so I examined the file /etc/init/lightdm.conf to see what it did. For the heck of it, I started lightdm at the command line and I got the login screen!

So, can anyone tell me why it is not starting automatically and how to make it do so?
