Question KDE 4.2.4 Hangs at Splash Screen on New Slackware 13 Install After Executing startx

I just installed slackware 13 on a second PC to try it out. I logged in to the bash prompt as root and tried executing startx. The KDE desktop launches but it hangs while the splash screen is being displayed. I see the hard drive, screwdriver & wrench, globe, etc. and then the X session becomes hung. I tried control-alt-shift-backspace to break the session but it appears hung. The mouse still moves around the screen but the keyboard appears unresponsive. Here is my Xorg.0.log file:

Code:

I ran xorgsetup and accepted all the default choices but this didn't seem to make any difference. Does anyone have any ideas for this one?

Thanks in advance!

Did you do a fresh install, or an upgrade? If you did an upgrade you need to (re)move ~/.kde.

You seem to have an intel graphical chipset. Intel chipsets are known to cause some trouble with the Xorg version used in Slackware 13.0. Refer to file CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT:

Quote:
extra/xf86-video-intel-alternate/xf86-video-intel-* (several alternate
versions of the Xorg intel driver just in case the default doesn't work
properly for you)
So it's recommended in case you have problems (and you have problems) to install an alternative intel driver among those available in the /extra/xf86-video-intel-alternate/ directory.

You need to install one package at the time. Each installation will replace the intel driver. Run the following commands:

Code:
removepkg xf86-video-intel
installpkg xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-i486-1.txz
removepkg will remove the installed driver
installkg will install a new one (version 2.5.1 in my example).

Another alternative is to use upgradepkg with this syntax:

Code:
upgradepkg xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-x86_64-1%xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-x86_64-1.txz

With my nVidia 7150m go chipset, it hanged after some 5-10 min at first, then it booted. It gets faster after that. It seemed that after setting the default runlevel to 4 in /etc/inittab it booted faster..

I think we are on the right path here as far as it being a video driver issue. I tried all the video packages suggested by gegechris99 with basically the same results and no success. The graphic was slightly different with each driver but more or less the same result. I should probably say now that I'm trying to install this on a stock dell dimension 3000. I found an old thread for slack 11 with someone hitting a similar issue. I tried installing the package suggested there with no luck. Does anyone have any other suggestions or experience with the video card in this machine?

Thanks in advance!

Hi all. I have a similar problem with Slack 13, running on Toshiba A200-1m6 (intel gma 950 video). There were xorg.conf and xorg.conf-vesa files. Using xorg.conf-vesa started kde and xfce but no mouse and keyboard running. I have tried xorgsetup to configure X, but the only thing I got was a "_" in the left upper corner and nothing else. Also tried changing intel drivers, but no success

I ended up solving the problem by installing a different video card in a PCI slot. It is an old one I had kicking around. I'm going to put a better one in when I get time. However, all I had to do was re-run xorgsetup with the new video card installed and KDE launched fine. Looks like you can get decent video cards for dirt cheap on ebay; that's where I'm headed.

Thanks to all who contributed!
