Stopping GNOME from opening new window for everything??

I just installed MandrivaLinux and am wondering if anyone knows how to get GNOME to stop opening new windows for everything?

I am in nautilus and when I click on a file folder a new window opens up with the folder contents. If I traverse down a few directories I end up with windows everywhere.

I am in Mozilla Firefox and likewise everything seems to open in a new window.

It's driving me batty!

Is there some overall setting under GNOME that tells it to open everything I do in the same window that is open? Unless I tell it to explicitly do otherwise? I know it's possible because I have used other distributions with GNOME where it's been otherwise.

MandrivaLinux seems to think that all these open windows are a more user friendly alternative or something I guess.

I've looked all over the GNOME settings and can't find anything.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Its not a problem with Mandriva, but with gnome (the feature is called spatial nautilus). Start nautilus, go to preferences -> behaviour and select "always open in browser windows". As for Firefox, you have to click on a link with your mouse wheel for a page to open in tabs.
