GRUB recover. Quick HOWTO.
Hi,
A small contribution from my side.
Problem:
A dual boot box (Win XP Pro. n RH 9) lost it’s GRUB after reinstallation of Win XP.
Steps taken to resolve:
step 1 > Booted the system off disk 1
step 2 > Entered rescue mode by typing ‘linux rescue’
step 3 > On reaching ‘sh#’ prompt after the initial
screens, typed ‘chroot /mnt/sysimage’
step 4 > Followed by the command ‘grub-install
/dev/(your device name; e.g. hda, sdb, etc)’ to install GRUB again
step 5 > Edited the /etc/grub.conf (or
/boot/grub/grub.conf) to change the line containing kernel vmlinuz… as … root=LABEL=/1 …
*Note* 1 was added as it was a dual boot box.
step 6 > Rebooted the box (Voila! Was up and
running!)
