programming to 'real' serial port in C++

what will I need to program to a serial port(not modem/ethernet) in C++? I'm really new at c++, and I'm doing a science fair project where I take the data coming in from a serial port connected thermometer, and output it to various places(MySql database, screen, text file, etc.). Thoughts?

Have never looked at C++ for this so far, but
maybe you can utilise
man tty_ioctl
man ioctl

The three manuals above are quite ok IMHO, I used them when I had to do serial port programming recently.
