urpmi won't add sources

On Mandrake 9.2rc2 using commands from Easy Urpmi as root:

[root@localhost jeff]# urpmi.removemedia -a
unable to take medium "Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1)" into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1)] exists
unable to take medium "Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2)" into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2)] exists
unable to take medium "International CD (x86) (cdrom3)" into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.International CD (x86) (cdrom3)] exists
nothing to remove (use urpmi.addmedia to add a media)
[root@localhost jeff]# urpmi.addmedia plf ...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/cooker with hdlist.cz
unable to take medium "Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1)" into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1)] exists
unable to take medium "Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2)" into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2)] exists
unable to take medium "International CD (x86) (cdrom3)" into account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.International CD (x86) (cdrom3)] exists
added medium plf
retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "plf"...
...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/cooker/hdlist.cz
...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/cooker/synthesis.hdlist.cz
...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/cooker/synthesis.hdlist.cz
...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/synthesis.hdlist.cz
...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/base/synthesis.hdlist.cz
...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/cooker/hdlist.cz
...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/cooker/hdlist.cz
...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/hdlist.cz
...knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/base/hdlist.cz
retrieve of source hdlist (or synthesis) failed
no hdlist file found for medium "plf"
examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.plf.cz]
problem reading synthesis file of medium "plf"
unable to update medium "plf"

(I had to change ftp to "..." to get this to post)
The problem has been consistent with a variety of sources, including cooker sources. what could be going on?

Do you have an update source installed? You might want to try updating urpmi and see if that fixes the problem.

If what liquidzoo suggests doesn't work, you could try erasing /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg and emptying /var/lib/urpmi
You'll have to manually add the CD sources again.
