Unhappy Can't install drakxtools-backend : bootloader-config is permission-denied

Hello people.

I installed Mandriva 2006 Free a couple of weeks ago (I'm quite new to Linux). After some hard time to configure my Internet connection and to install all the software I needed, I'm having big problems with various things :
  • on boot, when looking for new devices, it's written "FAILED" (it seems to be drakconf's fault)
  • in the Kicker, the connection icon disappeared (I can still launch the connection through the command line)
  • Kicker crashes on logout
  • amaroK crashes from time to time
  • no DrakX tools wants to start

I searched through the forums, and I found a topic called "No DrakX tools working..." from goosie (I can't create links yet, sorry)

I have exactly the same error message as him. So, hoping it would settle all my problems, I tried what was advised, but I'm getting this error :
Code:
[root@localhost main]# rpm -Uvh --force drakxtools-backend-10.3-0.64mdk.i586.rpm
Préparation... ########################################### [100%]
   1:drakxtools-backend ########################################### [100%]
erreur: échec du déballage de l'archive dans le fichier /usr/sbin/bootloader-config: cpio: rename échec - Permission non accordée
In approximative english :
Code:
error : unpacking of archive failed in file /usr/sbin/bootloader-config: cpio: rename failure - Permission denied
I tried to see what the permissions are for this file, but :
Code:
[root@localhost main]# ls -l /usr/sbin/bootloader-config*
ls: /usr/sbin/bootloader-config: Permission non accordée
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 fév 27 00:19 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;44023766
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 fév 27 00:33 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;44023abf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 fév 27 00:46 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;44023de0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 mar 7 19:47 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;440dd527
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 mar 7 20:06 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;440dd9af
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 mar 7 20:13 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;440ddb3c
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 mar 7 21:11 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;440de8d2
First line : permission is denied for root.

I don't understand where I am mistaken. Can you please help me ?

Thanks in advance.

Laurent

Hi.

The applet you were talking about is not present when I right-click on the tray.
In fact, I was thinking about the icon which goes near amaroK's and Kmix's ones. I suppose it is netapplet.

I typed mcc in a console, but I get the same error message as before ... let me post it :

Code:
[root@localhost neral]# mcc
Can't load '/usr/lib/libDrakX/auto/c/stuff/stuff.so' for module c::stuff: libldetect.so.0.6: Ne peut ouvrir le fichier d'objet partagé: Permission non accordée at /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.7/i386-linux/DynaLoader.pm line 230.
 at /usr/lib/libDrakX/c.pm line 5
Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/libDrakX/c.pm line 5.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/libDrakX/c.pm line 5.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/libDrakX/log.pm line 6.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/libDrakX/log.pm line 6.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/libDrakX/common.pm line 7.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/libDrakX/common.pm line 7.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/sbin/mcc line 28.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/sbin/mcc line 28.
(can't open shared object file : permission denied)

Same thing if I type # net_applet.

As before, it is talking about libDrakX and stuff.so. I have a big problem with that drakxtools thing ; maybe there's something I urpme'd and that I shoudn't. Any idea ?

I'm going to sleep (i'm in France). See you in a few hours.

Unhappy

Hi.

I see that no one has answered for one day. I'll try to sum up a little.

My main problem is, as written in the subject : no DrakX tool wants to start, and I can't install drakxtools-backend to repair this because my file /usr/sbin/bootloader-config is permission-denied.

I am with Mandriva 2006 Free.

Here is what I get when I try to start, for instance, drakconf (it's the same with mcc or any other DrakX tool) :

Code:
[root@localhost neral]# drakconf
Can't load '/usr/lib/libDrakX/auto/c/stuff/stuff.so' for module c::stuff: libldetect.so.0.6: Ne peut ouvrir le fichier d'objet partagé: Permission non accordée at /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.7/i386-linux/DynaLoader.pm line 230.
 at /usr/lib/libDrakX/c.pm line 5
Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/libDrakX/c.pm line 5.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/libDrakX/c.pm line 5.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/libDrakX/log.pm line 6.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/libDrakX/log.pm line 6.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/lib/libDrakX/common.pm line 7.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/lib/libDrakX/common.pm line 7.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/sbin/drakconf line 28.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/sbin/drakconf line 28.
Here is what I get when I try to install drakxtools-backend :

Code:
[root@localhost main]# rpm -Uvh --force drakxtools-backend-10.3-0.64mdk.i586.rpm
Préparation... ########################################### [100%]
   1:drakxtools-backend ########################################### [100%]
erreur: échec du déballage de l'archive dans le fichier /usr/sbin/bootloader-config: cpio: rename échec - Permission non accordée
And here is what I get when I list /usr/sbin/bootloader-config* :

Code:
[root@localhost main]# ls -l /usr/sbin/bootloader-config*
ls: /usr/sbin/bootloader-config: Permission non accordée
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 fév 27 00:19 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;44023766
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 fév 27 00:33 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;44023abf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 fév 27 00:46 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;44023de0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 mar 7 19:47 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;440dd527
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 mar 7 20:06 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;440dd9af
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 mar 7 20:13 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;440ddb3c
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 mar 7 21:11 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;440de8d2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6103 mar 9 01:54 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config;440f7cdc
Now for the questions :
How can I get access to /usr/sbin/bootloader-config so that I can reinstall drakxtools-backend ?
Is there another way to install an RPM that could solve this problem ?
Is there any other way to fix this ?
Could it be a problem with Perl ? (I'm asking because all accessible bootloader-config files are Perl programs)

One more thing : /usr/sbin/bootloader-config's permissions indicated by Windows are -rwxr-xr-x.

Any help will be much appreciated.

See you.

What happens when you do
Code:
#rpm -qa | grep -i drakx
On my system, I get the following output
Code:
vusi@musasa ~ $ rpm -qa | grep -i drakx
drakxtools-10.4.11-1mdk
drakxtools-newt-10.4.11-1mdk
drakxtools-backend-10.4.11-1mdk
If some of those packages are missing then install them using urpmi e.g.
Code:
#urpmi drakxtools-backend

Here is what I get :

Code:
[neral@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep -i drakx
drakxtools-backend-10.3-0.64mdk
drakxtools-newt-10.3-0.64.3.20060mdk
drakxtools-10.3-0.64.3.20060mdk
It is not the same version as for you, so I tried to install as you said ; but :

Code:
Préparation ... #############################################
      1/8: perl #############################################
      2/8: perl-base #############################################
      3/8: perl-suid #############################################
      4/8: drakxtools-backend #############################################
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/sbin/bootloader-config: cpio: rename failed - Permission non accordée
      5/8: drakxtools-newt #############################################
      6/8: drakxtools #############################################
      7/8: harddrake-ui #############################################
      8/8: harddrake #############################################
There is still something with this bootloader-config : nothing seems to be able to access this file.

What shall I do ?

Try to get the drakxtools-backend package from a different mirror because it seems like there is a problem with the current one. Also check to see if /usr/sbin/bootloader-config has permissions of 755.

I have just downloaded the same versions of drakxtools as you (10.4.11), I'll try to install them as soon as I get back home.

About the permissions of /usr/sbin/bootloader-config, I have already posted this :

Code:
[root@localhost main]# ls -l /usr/sbin/bootloader-config*
ls: /usr/sbin/bootloader-config: Permission non accordée (Permission denied)
...
Although I'm in command line as root, I'm not allowed to access it.

However, YAReG (under Windows) says /usr/sbin/bootloader-config is -rwxr-xr-x (755, I assume). Strange.

I'll chmod it, to see what happens.

More news in a few hours.

It seems then that its not a problem with the package you were trying to install but its to do with permissions. Hopefully chmod will help you out.

(crying in the back of the room)

I tried chmod 755 /usr/sbin/bootloader-config.
I tried chown root /usr/sbin/bootloader-config.

Neither worked : both say "Permission denied".

And I also tried (in fact I did it first) to install drakxtools*-10.4, and :
- they asked for an accessible bootloader-config ;
- now I have no DrakX tool (all deinstalled) ;
- if I retry, they fail with an in/out error on bootloader-config;random-numbers.

I'm trying to change the permissions with a live CD, I'm back in a few minutes.

No. It didn't work. Even with live CDs (Kaella/Knooppix and amaroK Live/PCLinuxOS), this damn file is still permission-denied.

What is this bootloader-config file related to ? LILO, maybe ?

By the way, how can a file get completely unaccessible, even by root, even in pure command line (no X), with no way to change this ?

I can still try something, but I will wait until tomorrow.

See you.
